In a significant advancement for agriculture, a new variety of yam, dubbed SHARP-SHARP, has been officially released into the Nigerian and international markets, marking a pivotal moment for farmers and stakeholders within the agricultural sector. This development was announced following the variety’s registration and release by the National Variety Release Committee (NVRC), in a collaborative effort between the National Root Crops Research Institute (NRCRI), the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), and Ebonyi State University, Abakiliki.
UMUDr36, commercially named SHARP-SHARP, stands out for its early maturity, harvesting in just 180 to 210 days, a feature that significantly reduces the cultivation cycle and allows for quicker market readiness. This characteristic is poised to revolutionize yam cultivation, providing a timely solution to the urgent demands of both local and international markets.
Beyond its rapid maturity, SHARP-SHARP boasts a high flour yield of 39.3% and an impressive yield potential of 33.8 tonnes per hectare, characteristics that underscore its potential to enhance food security and significantly improve the economic returns for farmers. This breakthrough comes as a result of meticulous research and collaboration among NRCRI, IITA, and Ebonyi State University, highlighting a shared commitment to agricultural innovation and sustainability.
The introduction of SHARP-SHARP into the market is expected to have a transformative impact on the agricultural landscape, offering a new and efficient option for yam farmers looking to increase their productivity and profitability. Its release not only represents a milestone in crop development but also serves as a testament to the potential of collaborative research and innovation in addressing some of the most pressing challenges in agriculture today.
As SHARP-SHARP makes its way into the fields of Nigeria and beyond, it brings with it the promise of enhanced yield, improved food security, and a brighter future for the agricultural sector. This early-maturing yam variety is set to change the game for yam cultivation, making it an exciting time for agriculture in Nigeria and across the globe.
The national mandate of NRCRI is to research into the genetic improvement, production, processing, storage utilization and socio-economies of root and tuber crops of economic importance.
To provide the necessary environment for the production, processing and marketing of value-added products of root and tuber crops towards National food security, income generation, gainful employment and rapid industrial development.
The Institute in collaboration with IITA, Ibadan, has substantially contributed to the National Food Security and sufficiency through research and extension activities on root and tuber crops
