Cassava Programme

The Cassava Program at the National Root Crops Research Institute (NRCRI) is a key initiative focused on improving cassava production, processing, and utilization in Nigeria and beyond. The objective of the program is to develop high-yielding, disease-resistant, and nutritionally enhanced cassava varieties that can significantly contribute to food security, income generation, and industrial applications.

Objectives:

1. Breeding and Genetic Improvement: Develop cassava varieties resistant to diseases and pest, along with improved yield and nutritional content.
2. Agronomy and Crop Management: Optimize agronomic practices to increase cassava productivity and sustainability.
3. Post-Harvest Technology: Innovate processing techniques to reduce post-harvest losses and enhance the shelf life and quality of cassava products.
4. Capacity Building: Train farmers, researchers, and extension workers in modern cassava cultivation and processing techniques.

Notable Achievements:

• Development of Improved Varieties: The program in collaboration with International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) has successfully developed and released 56 improved cassava varieties, widely adopted by farmers due to their high yield, disease resistance, and suitability for various agro-ecological zones.
• Cassava Value Chain Enhancement: The program has played a pivotal role in advancing the cassava value chain, promoting the use of cassava in the production of flour, starch, ethanol, and other industrial products.
• Research and Innovation: NRCRI has made significant contributions to cassava research, including the development of biofortified cassava varieties rich in vitamin A, which addresses micronutrient deficiencies in vulnerable populations.
• Capacity Building and Outreach: Through training programs and field demonstrations, the institute has empowered numerous farmers and stakeholders, leading to increased cassava productivity and improved livelihoods.
