IRESI Outstation

Iresi outstation in Osun State, Nigeria, is a critical component of the National Root Crops Research Institute (NRCRI), which is dedicated to the research and development of root and tuber crops. The NRCRI, with its headquarters in Umuahia, Abia State, operates several outstations across Nigeria, each playing a vital role in advancing agricultural research and supporting local farming communities. Iresi outstation, situated in the southwestern part of Nigeria, focuses on the cultivation and improvement of root crops, contributing significantly to the region’s agricultural development and food security.

The NRCRI’s mission is to enhance the production and productivity of root and tuber crops in Nigeria, including crops like cassava, yam, sweet potato, and cocoyam. These crops are essential for the country’s food supply and economy, providing sustenance for millions of Nigerians. The Iresi outstation, as part of this network, conducts research aimed at improving crop yields, resistance to pests and diseases, and the nutritional value of these vital food sources.

Recent initiatives by the NRCRI, including the Iresi outstation, involve transforming these sub-stations into specialized Centres of Excellence. This strategic move aims to leverage the unique strengths of each location to foster innovation and excellence in root crop research and development. The Iresi outstation’s efforts in promoting the adoption of improved crop varieties and farming practices underscore its importance to Nigeria’s agricultural sector and its contribution to ensuring food security in the region.
