Abia Agriculture Commissioner, Dr. Cliff Agbaeze Hails Prof. Chiedozie Egesi on Global Agri-Food Pioneer Recognition
The Honourable Commissioner for Agriculture in Abia State, Dr. Cliff Agbaeze, FCIB, has congratulated the Executive Director of the National Root Crops Research Institute (NRCRI), Prof. Chiedozie Egesi, on his recognition as one of the 2026 Top Agri-Food Pioneers by the World Food Prize Foundation.
In a congratulatory message issued on behalf of the Abia State Ministry of Agriculture, Dr. Agbaeze described the prestigious international honour as a well-deserved recognition of Prof. Egesi’s exceptional contributions to agricultural research, innovation, and global food security.
According to the Commissioner, Prof. Egesi’s pioneering work in breeding and developing improved cassava varieties, including vitamin A-enriched and disease-resistant cultivars, has significantly transformed the livelihoods of millions of smallholder farmers while strengthening the resilience of Africa’s food systems.
He noted that for more than two decades, Prof. Egesi has remained at the forefront of cassava breeding research through the application of cutting-edge genomic technologies, helping to position the National Root Crops Research Institute as a leading centre of agricultural innovation across sub-Saharan Africa.
Dr. Agbaeze further stated that the globally acclaimed scientist’s remarkable achievements continue to inspire a new generation of agricultural researchers while reaffirming Nigeria’s capacity to provide world-class leadership in agricultural science and innovation.
The Commissioner also highlighted the strong partnership between the Abia State Ministry of Agriculture and Prof. Egesi, describing him as a valued collaborator whose international recognition brings honour not only to NRCRI and the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), but also to the entire agricultural community in Abia State and across Nigeria.
He expressed optimism that the latest global recognition would serve as further motivation for Prof. Egesi to continue advancing agricultural research, improving food security, empowering farmers, and promoting sustainable agricultural development across Africa.
Dr. Agbaeze concluded by wishing the renowned agricultural scientist continued success in his efforts to drive innovation and transform the agricultural sector, while extending heartfelt congratulations on the exceptional global recognition.
